A team of experts of the RVCDP has completed the process of creating Unions of Rice Cooperatives in the project implementation sites in the West and North West Regions, through which the project will be implemented. The team consisting the Project Agronomist, the Socio-Economic and Gender Expert along with the Heads of the Project Implementation Units (PIU) of the project for the respective regions, formed the Unions in conformity with the tenets prescribed by the OHADA law. The various Unions of Rice Cooperatives have also voted the members of the Board of Directors and the Supervisory Boards, as well as the executives (President, Vice-Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers) to oversee the running of the unions. During the rigorous exercise, the project Agronomist underscored the need for the elected officials to be transparent, selfless and devoted in the management of the Unions, as these responsibilities come with loads of sacrifices.
The Socio-Economist on her part, emphasized the importance of communication and information sharing within the unions, in order to keep everyone abreast with activities of the RVCDP. The unions are supposed to act as liaison between the project and the farmers. This activity will end with the formation an Apex structure in each region, following the 3-tier system of Cooperatives.
